A widely anticipated rain event for the central Argentina crop belt at the end of the first full week of February turned out to be only scattered in regards to significant precipitation -- one inch or heavier. Rainfall amounts recorded by the Argentina weather bureau Servicio de Meteorologica show that occurrences of one inch (25 millimeters) or more were hard to find. Only a handful of sites in the major Argentina crop belt of northwestern Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santa Fe and Entre Rios states recorded that amount of precipitation. Other recorded precipitation totals were under one-half inch (12 mm), and quite a few areas did not receive any precipitation.

Buenos Aires Grain Exchange agronomist Esteban J. Copati tweeted a less-than-enthusiastic assessment of the rain. "The rains accumulated during the last 24 hours were isolated and with less intensity than expected -- not helpful for crops," Copati wrote.

After this lackluster rainfall performance, another week of dry and warm conditions is in store for central Argentina. "The (forecast) models do not show another chance for showers until the end of next week or next weekend," said DTN Senior Ag Meteorologist Joel Burgio. "Prospects for crops in central Argentina should again start to decline after stabilizing for a day or two."
