Weekly State Crop Report and Weather Comments

The latest weekly state crop reports continue to show very good ratings for corn and soybeans in much of the Midwest. Only in Indiana and Ohio are crop ratings only fair due to prior dryness. However significant rains in these areas during the past week has allowed for some improvement in crop ratings. There is some talk about drought concerns in south-central and northwest Nebraska while in eastern North Dakota and Minnesota it remains too wet. However this has had only a minimal impact on ratings. A near to above normal rainfall pattern during the next 6-10 days will continue to favor filling crops but will begin to become less favorable for maturing crops and any early harvesting.

Wet weather has been disruptive to the corn harvest in the Delta states, especially in Louisiana where major flooding has occurred. Harvest progress is running behind normal in all areas. The outlook for the next 7-10 days calls for drier weather which will improve harvest conditions. Recent wet weather has benefitted filling soybeans.

Despite wet weather in eastern North Dakota and Minnesota, the spring wheat harvest remains well ahead of normal due to the early planting and development of the crop this year.

It is still a little early but there are no major concerns at this time regarding soil moisture for winter wheat planting in the Southern Plains.

Our latest calculation of the sea surface temperature in the equatorial eastern Pacific for the first half of August still shows temperatures averaging near normal levels. No signs of a developing La Nina at this time.
