OMAHA (DTN) -- Nearly all retail fertilizer prices tracked by DTN continue to rise, with seven of eight fertilizers showing month-over-month increases in the fourth week of October 2018.

Urea led the way with a $21-per-ton increase, spiking from $385 last month to $406 in this latest update.

That was followed by an $8/ton increase in 10-34-0 to $457/ton. UAN28 came in at $243/ton, jumping $7 since last month. Anhydrous and UAN32 both recorded $6 increases this month. Anhydrous came in at $499/ton and UAN32 at $284/ton. Potash came in at $366/ton, a $5 increase month over month. MAP recorded the only fertilizer price drop this week, falling from $520/ton to $518/ton.

On a price per pound of nitrogen basis, the average urea price was at $0.44/lb.N, anhydrous $0.30/lb.N, UAN28 $0.43/lb.N and UAN32 $0.44/lb.N.

A French company called Ynsect announced an interesting development in the world of organic fertilizer during the past week regarding research on the use of insect excrement as fertilizer.

Work done at a demonstration plant at the end of 2016 found the organic fertilizer has a nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content of 4-3-3 and an organic matter content of about 90%.

As part of a partnership with the agricultural engineering school UniLaSalle, Ynsect carried out tests on wheat, rapeseed and corn to evaluate the power of the fertilizer and its effects on soil.

According to the company, corn experienced a 70% increase in biomass at the eight-leaf stage and wheat showed a 25% increase in the number of shoots and a 40% increase in biomass. You can find the press release here: http://www.ynsect.com/….

DTN collects roughly 1,700 retail fertilizer bids from 310 retailer locations weekly. Not all fertilizer prices change each week. Prices are subject to change at any time.

DTN Pro Grains subscribers can find current retail fertilizer price in the DTN Fertilizer Index on the Fertilizer page under Farm Business.

Retail fertilizer charts dating back to 2010 are available in the DTN fertilizer segment. The charts included cost of N/lb., DAP, MAP, potash, urea, 10-34-0, anhydrous, UAN28 and UAN32.
