OMAHA (DTN)— Forecast details calling for wet conditions across the Midwest, and widespread rain for the Southern Plains, are key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

WETTER MIDWEST FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for the Midwest to have a wet pattern during the next week to 10 days. This is a change from forecast indications earlier in the week. Moderate to heavy totals are notable in the southern half of the region; however, periods of rain are quite likely in all sectors. This wet pattern will keep planting progress slow. The 30-year average corn planting rate is 60 percent complete by May 10. This benchmark value will be closely watched.

COLD AND DAMP NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, much cooler to colder conditions, along with periods of rain, are indicated through the next week. This pattern will continue to disrupt spring fieldwork. Spring wheat planting progress is around two weeks late.

RAINY SOUTHERN PLAINS PATTERN

Across the Southern Plains, moderate to heavy rain is indicated through the next week to 10 days. Some flash flooding may occur; however, moisture will be beneficial for winter wheat, cotton planting and pasture for livestock.

MIDWEEK DELTA RAIN

The Delta has a round of moderate to heavy rainfall expected through the next couple days. This will likely mean further delays to seasonal fieldwork and planting.

DRY IN CANADIAN PRAIRIES

In the Canadian Prairies, dryness is becoming the most concerning feature. Dry soils will favor early spring fieldwork, but the dry conditions would also stress any early planted crops or winter crops. The five-day forecast shows some moderate precipitation in southwestern areas, mostly this coming weekend. However, the six-to-10-day period offers no meaningful follow-up moisture, as temperatures turn colder.

VARIABLE BRAZIL RAIN

Across Brazil, central crop areas will have light to moderate rain, favorable for the second-crop corn (safrinha). Southern Brazil will have moderate to heavy rainfall, causing some disruption in late soybean harvest.

MOSTLY FAVORABLE IN CENTRAL ARGENTINA

Central Argentina crop areas have mainly favorable conditions, with crop prospects indicating much larger production than a year ago. Northern Argentina has some flooding.

BENEFICIAL BLACK SEA MOISTURE

Black Sea region crop-producing areas have mainly adequate to surplus soil moisture, favorable for developing winter grains. There is some dryness in southern Russia.

SCATTERED AUSTRALIA RAIN

Crop areas of eastern Australia have a few isolated thunderstorms with light rain indicated Wednesday. This moisture will offer very little in the way of benefit ahead of winter wheat seeding.
