OMAHA (DTN) -- Intense cold over the central U.S. and variable effects due to rain in South America are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

STRONG MIDWEST COLD WAVE

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for very cold conditions to build over the Midwest during the weekend. The cold will offer some improvement for harvest due to freezing of wet areas for machinery support. Periods of snow in the northern Midwest, however, will disrupt progress. The trend is drier in the six- to 10-day time frame.

SNOW AND COLD IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, hard freeze conditions remain in effect over much of the region going into the weekend, possibly damaging early-developing wheat. Periods of rain and snow will also hinder winter wheat planting along with row-crop harvest.

SNOW FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, a round of snow and rain during the rest of the week will disrupt harvest. Snow is most likely over western portions of the region.

BENEFICIAL BRAZIL TREND

Brazil crop areas again have beneficial conditions for development. Hotter, drier weather for southern growing areas will favor planting progress through Monday. Rains during the middle of next week will supply favorable moisture for germination and early development.

HEAVY RAIN FOR ARGENTINA

In central Argentina, forecasts continue to indicate heavy rain over the next week. Flooding and row-crop planting disruption are likely, along with possible damage to ripening wheat.

LATE-WEEK EUROPE RAIN

Across Europe, periods of rain continued through the weekend. The pattern is indicated to turn drier next week.

FAVORABLE BLACK SEA CONDITIONS

Russia and Ukraine have a dry pattern, which is favorable for final summer-crop harvest along with development of winter grains.

CENTRAL CHINA RAIN

Moderate to heavy rain through southern and east-central China during this week will favor development of recently planted winter wheat and rapeseed.

DRY INDIA PATTERN

In northern India, dry conditions are generally favorable for planting winter grains and oilseed crops.

DRIER SOUTH AFRICA FORECAST

In South Africa, a new period of dry and hot conditions is forecast through the weekend. Recent showers brought needed moisture for crops.
