OMAHA (DTN) -- Weekend rain across much of the Midwest, and widely variable moisture for the Southern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

WEEKEND MIDWEST RAIN

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for moderate to heavy rain across most of the Midwest during the next week. The rain will bring a new round of planting disruption in the northwestern areas. Elsewhere in the region, conditions are favorable for early crop development. Drier conditions in the northeastern Midwest will be favorable for planting.

VARIABLE SOUTHERN PLAINS SHOWERS

In the Southern Plains, winter wheat crop conditions remain poor in many western areas. A round of rain is indicated for the region, focusing in Kansas. Overall benefit will be marginal.

RAIN FORMS IN NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, light to moderate rain is in effect during the final portion of the week. The moisture will disrupt planting, but also be beneficial since drought recovery is still needed.

SHOWERS FOR SOUTHEAST

Southeastern U.S. and Delta crops have several periods of showers indicated in the forecast through the next five days. The rainfall will generally be favorable for soil moisture, and will encourage renewed planting progress.

FAVORABLE PRAIRIES PATTERN

The Canadian Prairies have favorable weather for planting spring wheat and canola at this time. Some light to moderate rain is indicated through the weekend, followed by a return to drier conditions during the six- to 10-day period.

CENTRAL BRAZIL SHOWERS

Central Brazil remains in line for light to moderate rain through the weekend. Heaviest amounts are indicated for Mato Grosso do Sul, Parana and Rio Grande do Sul. This prospect will be closely watched due to the focus of heavier totals for an area that has been driest recently. The rain would be beneficial for second-crop (safrinha) corn, already expected to be lower in production than a year ago because of heat and dryness.

WEKEND RUSSIA RAIN

Russia and Ukraine crop areas have moderate rain indicated through the weekend. The moisture will be useful for heading winter wheat along with summer crop planting and establishment.

LIGHT RAIN FOR CHINA

China's primary northeastern row crop areas have scattered light precipitation indicated over the next week. The rain will bring some soil moisture benefit, but more is needed. Soil moisture supply is variable in the region.

DRY AUSTRALIA FORECAST

Australia's wheat areas continue with a dry pattern through the next week. Soil moisture is especially short in the western wheat areas. Producers are seeding into dry ground.

FAVORABLE INDIA MONSOON OUTLOOK

Seasonal forecasts from the India meteorological agency indicate a high probability for the 2018 monsoon season to bring at least average precipitation. This is a favorable seasonal forecast for India summer crops.
