Cold for Season in Midwest

OMAHA (DTN) -- More Midwest fieldwork delays due to wet and cold conditions, and reduced amounts of rain in the Southern Plains forecast, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

CHILLY MIDWEST TREND

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for rain, snow and ice to cover much of the western and north-central Midwest through the next 24 hours. Precipitation and cold spring weather will keep fieldwork at a standstill for a while longer. A slightly warmer and drier trend is indicated for the region in the 10-day period; however, this is uncertain. Fieldwork and planting progress are the slowest in five years over much of the region.

COLD FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

Across the Northern Plains, low temperatures continue to delay spring fieldwork, along with maintaining above-normal stress levels on livestock. A somewhat improving temperature pattern is possible during the 10-day period; however, progress on fieldwork and spring wheat planting will continue to be slow.

REDUCED SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN AMOUNTS

A round of rain continues in the Southern Plains forecast for the coming weekend. However, forecast rainfall amounts are reduced compared to previous indications. Thus, drought easing will be minimal, notably in the southwestern sector of the region. Prior to the onset of rain, very dry conditions and strong winds maintain extreme wildfire danger in many areas.

FAVORABLE SHORT-TERM DELTA PATTERN

Delta producers have a mainly dry pattern through the end of the week, which will be favorable for fieldwork and planting progress. Moderate to heavy rain is indicated to move into the region during the last part of the coming weekend.

VARIABLE BRAZIL RAIN

Brazil's crop areas have additional rainfall ahead through the end of the week, mostly in the central and northern locales. This is favorable for second-crop (safrinha) corn.

FAVORABLE CHINA CONDITIONS

China’s primary wheat and rapeseed areas have favorable crop conditions and soil moisture. Additional showers are possible at the end of the week.

WIDESPREAD SOUTH AFRICA RAIN

South Africa crop areas continue with periods of showers and mild weather. This pattern is overall favorable for crops, with a few delays to sugarcane harvest due to rain.
