Southern Plains Rain Chances

OMAHA (DTN) -- A powerful storm ahead for the Northern Plains and Midwest, and rain chances in the 10-day time frame for the Southern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

VOLATILE MIDWEST FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast again calls for a powerful storm system to move into the Midwest at the end of this week. This is likely to produce moderate to heavy rain, strong winds and severe thunderstorms in the region. Rain likely changes to snow and blowing snow through northwest areas Friday night or during Saturday. Snow may also develop into the north-central Midwest region Saturday. This is likely to further delay spring fieldwork and early corn planting. Blizzard conditions or snow and wind in the northwest will likely affect travel and transport. Ahead of the weekend storm, warm and windy conditions will allow for some row crop fieldwork in western and southern portions of the region.

SNOWSTORM FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

A powerful storm with heavy snow and strong winds is in store for the Northern Plains Friday into Saturday. Rain changing to snow and strong winds appears likely for South Dakota, southern North Dakota and central Minnesota. It is likely to produce an area of heavy snow and when combined with high winds should lead to blizzard conditions for some locations.

Increased stress to livestock is likely. Spring planting delays continue. Snow and blizzard conditions affect travel and transport.

RAIN PROSPECTS IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

Drought conditions remain in effect throughout the Southern Plains. However, there is a chance for moderate to locally heavy rain in much of the region in the seven- to 10-day timeframe. This would be useful precipitation for the struggling winter wheat crop.

STORMS FOR DELTA

In the Delta, severe storms are expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds, possibly hail and possibly tornados to the region late Friday or Friday night into Saturday. Soil moisture is likely adequate to surplus for earlier planted corn. Slowdowns will likely occur to planting progress due to these periodic heavy rain events.

CENTRAL BRAZIL SHOWERS

Across Brazil, central crop areas have periods of showers forecast through the rest of the week. This rainfall occurrence will be favorable for the second-crop (safrinha) corn.

VARIABLE CHINA SHOWERS

China wheat areas have drier and much warmer this week. Showers and thundershowers are expected through Friday, favoring southern and central areas. Rainfall through the southern half of the region late last week and again at the end of this week will maintain favorable growing conditions, despite periods of above normal temperatures. More rain is needed to supplement irrigation through northern areas.
