OMAHA (DTN) -- A mainly dry trend continuing for the next few days in Argentina, showers in Northern Brazil, heavy rains for the Ohio River Valley area, and some rain chances for the Southern Plains are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

UNFAVORABLE ARGENTINA DRY TREND

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for dry weather and a warming trend that will maintain stress on crops in Argentina at least into the weekend. There is a chance for southern areas on Sunday and for the main growing belt Monday into Tuesday. However, this activity does not appear to be enough to significantly change the situation for either crop. Stress will continue due to drying soils and episodes of above-normal temperatures. Crop losses appear likely.

VARIABLE BRAZIL PRECIPITATION

Another dry period for key growing areas of Rio Grande Do Sul in southern Brazil is expected during the next six to seven days or so. It will not be very hot, however. Crops, especially soybeans, would likely benefit from more rainfall in more rainfall in this area. Increasing showers in northern growing areas will again slow seasonal fieldwork, especially during the weekend and Monday. This includes harvesting of soybeans and planting of second-crop corn. Soil moisture in the major growing areas for second-crop corn remains adequate to surplus at this time.

SOME RAIN CHANCES IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

The current weather pattern with ridging in the southeast and a trough in the southwest increases the chance for needed rains to occur in a portion of the Central and Southern Plains region. The best chance is in southeast areas, but there is at least some chance for needed rains in south-central and a portion of the east-central growing belt as well.

SNOW IN NORTHERN PLAINS

Snow today in South Dakota may lead to transportation delays. Snow during the weekend may cause transport problems in the upper Midwest areas.

SOUTH AFRICA SHOWERS

South Africa crop areas will see scattered showers and thundershowers likely increase across the region during the next three to five days. This will provide favorable soil moisture for maize ranging from reproduction to filling at this time and for the soybean crop entering the filling stages.
