OMAHA (DTN) -- Showers and thunderstorms for the end of the week in many Argentina crop areas, and a promising rain chance in southern Brazil, are key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

WEEKEND ARGENTINA RAIN FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms that formed in southern Argentina crop areas Thursday night into early Friday to work northward into key row crop areas. Rainfall from Thursday night was noted in Buenos Aires and portions of Cordoba. Current indications suggest that by late Saturday, most of the primary corn and soybean areas of Argentina will see moderate or heavy thunderstorm activity. This will help to ease concerns, somewhat, after a fairly hot week.

FAVORABLE CENTRAL BRAZIL PATTERN

Central Brazil has again favorable crop conditions. Rainfall is consistent, with beneficial soil moisture for crops.

WEEKEND RAIN FOR SOUTHERN BRAZIL

Southern Brazil has a promising round of showers and thunderstorms indicated through the weekend. If verified, this would help to maintain current yield forecasts for this area.

COLD WEEKEND IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

The Southern Plains region has a turn to colder weather through the weekend, but nothing that looks threatening to winter wheat. The trend stays dry, however. Snow in central and east Kansas Thursday along with strong winds increased stress to livestock for a time.

MID-JANUARY MIDWEST COLD WAVE

The Midwest had a round of rain, freezing rain and snow during the past 24 hours. The same combination will continue in southern and eastern areas Friday. A cold wave follows, but does not appear damaging for the winter wheat crop. The pattern looks warmer later next week.

BITTER COLD FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

A return to very cold weather in the northern Plains is underway, and will last into the first part of next week. Snowfall will be limited to only a few snow showers or squalls when a secondary Arctic cold front tracks through during Sunday.

MILDER SOUTH AFRICA PATTERN

In South Africa, cooler temperatures and scattered to widely scattered showers and thundershowers were noted during the Tuesday-Wednesday time period this week. This should help ease stress to developing to early reproductive maize in the area. The pattern continues to features near-to-above-normal temperatures, but with occasional periods when scattered thundershowers become possible.
