OMAHA (DTN) -- Variable rain prospects in Argentina, and a new cold wave headed for the Southern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

STRESSFUL ARGENTINA HEAT

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for the main Argentina corn and soybean areas of Cordoba, Santa Fe and northern Buenos Aires to continue with a variable pattern. Hot weather into Friday will be followed by scattered thunderstorms Saturday. Reproductive crops will be under some stress until the thunderstorms break the heat wave this weekend. Farther south, La Pampa and southern Buenos Aires continue under a more extreme weather pattern. Longer periods of hotter weather and shorter periods of lighter showers means increased stress to corn and sunflower crops, and a likely reduction in yield potential, especially for any reproductive crops at this time. High temperatures are expected to be 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (35 to 38 Celsius) through Friday.

FAVORABLE CENTRAL BRAZIL PATTERN

In central Brazil, favorable conditions for developing soybeans continue. Expectations are for Brazil soybean production to exceed previous projections.

WEEKEND SHOWERS FOR SOUTHERN BRAZIL

The majority of southern Brazil is in line for light to moderate weekend rainfall. Crop conditions are generally favorable at this time.

COLDER IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

The Southern Plains will have a turn to colder conditions at the end of this week. The intensity and duration of the cold wave will be closely watched. Portions of Kansas may have several inches of snow, which would offer some protection against the effects of the cold wave.

NEW MIDWEST WINTER STORM

A new winter storm system is headed for the Midwest during the last half of the week. Colder weather will spread across the region Thursday, accompanied by rain changing to snow. Both ice storm and snowstorm conditions are possible. The highest risk for heavy snow of 4 inches or more appears to be in the Ohio Valley during Friday. Ice storm conditions may also develop as soon as Thursday night. Cold conditions will be intensified by strong winds.

SNOW AND COLD FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, a new round of bitter cold and snow conditions are forecast through the end of the week into the weekend. Rain changing to ice and snow develops Wednesday night into Thursday, followed by very cold and windy conditions during Thursday with blowing snow possible. This combination will be stressful to livestock and transportation in Minnesota, Iowa, the eastern Dakotas and eastern Nebraska.

STRESSFUL SOUTH AFRICA HEAT

South Africa was hot and dry during the past weekend. Highs of 95 to 100 F (35 to 38 C) have been reported with some locally hotter. The heat was stressful to developing maize and likely will reduce the yield potential for any reproductive maize. The high temperatures Monday were not as hot as during the weekend but still in an 88-to-96 F range. Temperatures continued to cool Tuesday with scattered light showers in the area.
