OMAHA (DTN) -- Minimal rain for Argentina, and continued frequent showers in Brazil, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.

LIMITED ARGENTINA PRECIPITATION

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for limited rainfall in drier areas of southern and northwestern Argentina. Episodes of extreme heat and a below-normal rainfall pattern increases the risk to crops grown in La Pampa and southern Buenos Aires province during the period. Santa Fe and northern Buenos Aires also looks to trend towards above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall during the next seven to 10 days which will increase the risk in this area as well. Cordoba had needed rainfall during the weekend, but with hot weather preceding the showers and a drier pattern the balance of this week this moisture will be quickly used up.

ADDITIONAL CENTRAL BRAZIL SHOWERS

Central Brazil remains in line for periods of rainfall along with seasonal temperatures. This combination is favorable for crops.

MOSTLY FAVORABLE IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL

In southern Brazil, generally favorable conditions remain in place over Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul. In Rio Grande do Sul, crops have adequate moisture for current needs, but there are hints of a drier pattern during the next week.

MIDWEST COLD WAVE

In the Midwest, subzero cold through the northern portion of the soft red winter wheat areas during the past weekend may have caused some damage to wheat.

STRESSFUL NORTHERN PLAINS COLD

In the Northern Plains, extreme cold has been stressful to livestock during the past week. Some additional cold is in store this first week of the new year. Snow occurred through a portion of this region during recent days.

COLD DAMAGES PLAINS WHEAT

Subzero cold over north and central areas of the Southern Plains Sunday and Monday mornings may mean damage to unprotected winter wheat, especially in southern Nebraska, southwest, central and northeast Kansas. A more favorable pattern for overwintering wheat during the second part of this week.

VARIABLE SOUTH AFRICA TREND

In South Africa, southern and eastern crop areas maintain favorable crop conditions due to periods of rain and seasonal temperatures. However, north-central, northwest and west-central locations continue to offer concern resulting from a hotter and drier pattern.
