Milder Midwest Forecast

OMAHA (DTN) -- An intense central U.S. cold wave and variable precipitation for the winter corn areas of Brazil are the primary weather features for the commodity market's attention Wednesday.

WARMER MIDWEST TREND

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for rain and snow in the eastern Midwest Wednesday, and cold air to remain in the region for one more day. Temperatures may have been low enough to damage winter wheat and any emerged corn. A warming trend and widespread rain this weekend will help damaged plants recover. Temperatures will rise next week, allowing the growing season to get back on track.

MORE FREEZING IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, much-below-normal temperatures and hard freezes during recent days may have damaged wheat and emerged corn. Risks for hard freezes continue for one more day before temperatures begin to moderate. A system next week may bring widespread showers and some precipitation even in drought areas; however, this system is also a threat to produce severe storms.

SCATTERED NORTHERN PLAINS MOISTURE

Northern Plains temperatures below normal will continue through the next week. Though showers have started to move back into the region, amounts have not been enough to reduce drought. A system next week may produce some moderate showers and will be closely watched.

COLD MIDWEEK IN DELTA

In the Delta, periods of rain and snow occurred Tuesday night in the northern areas. The entire region has freezing threats to crops through Thursday. Wheat and emerged soybeans may be affected. More widespread showers and above-normal temperatures are expected this weekend into next week.

RAIN FOR SOUTHEAST

The southeastern U.S. will be relatively dry during the next few days, allowing any wet soils to drain and allow more planting progress. However, moderate to heavy showers will move through this weekend, delaying progress again.

MINIMAL PRAIRIES MOISTURE

The entire Canadian Prairies region continues to be in drought this spring. Another front will move through Thursday and Friday with more moderate snow showers in Alberta but less elsewhere. The cold continues through the week but could retreat northward next week.

LIGHT BRAZIL SHOWERS

Primary Brazil central and southern crop areas have only light rain showers in the seven-day forecast. The end of the rainy season appears to be starting for central Brazil. This is unfavorable for the second-crop (safrinha) corn which has largely been planted later than average.

ARGENTINA RAIN

Primary Argentina crop areas have widespread moderate to heavy showers ahead for most crop areas through the rest of the week. The rain will disrupt harvest progress.

MORE EUROPE COLD

Across Europe, another cold front could produce more frosts and freezes for northern and eastern areas through the coming weekend. In the south, warmth and periods of showers should maintain favorable conditions for reproductive winter grains. The northern cold pattern is likely to further delay spring planting for corn and other crops.

FAVORABLE BLACK SEA CONDITIONS

Scattered showers continue in the forecast for Russia and Ukraine through the weekend, bringing favorable soil moisture for greening and developing winter wheat in Russia and Ukraine.
