OMAHA (DTN) -- Concern over light rain in South America's major crop areas and chances for precipitation in the United States Southern Plains in the next week are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

EASTERN MIDWEST HARVEST DELAY

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for some delay to final stages of harvest in the eastern Midwest after showers and thunderstorms during the past weekend. Mostly dry and breezy conditions this week will be helpful to dry soils and allow for progress. A system this weekend will bring moderate rainfall back through the region.

RAIN CHANCE IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

Southern Plains wheat areas have light to moderate rain prospects indicated during the five- to seven-day time frame. This would be useful moisture ahead of dormancy for winter wheat and will be closely watched.

MILD NORTHERN PLAINS FORECAST

The Northern Plains will have a dry and warmer pattern during the coming week as snow departs eastern North Dakota on Monday. Some showers will be possible at the end of the week, but conditions will remain mild.

DRY SOUTHEAST PATTERN

Delta and Southeast crop areas will be dry through the next seven days. This drier trend will be favorable for late-stage harvest.

BRAZIL RAIN CONCERN

Brazil crop areas had widespread showers occurred over the weekend. However, precipitation was mainly light in central crop areas, with moderate to locally heavy amounts confined to southeastern locales. The week ahead features moderate to heavy rain in northern areas, but only light to moderate central and south. Concern is increasing over a lack of soil moisture for soybean crop development.

MINIMAL ARGENTINA RAIN BENEFIT

Argentina saw scattered showers over the weekend. However, drought continues across much of the country. Showers will be possible across portions of the west through the week, but are not likely to occur over the east, where stress and short-term dryness may creep back into the region.

SOUTH RUSSIA RAIN CHANCE

Black Sea region crop areas had light showers fall in northern sectors during the past weekend, but severe drought continues to plague the region and limit growth on winter wheat. Frosts and freezes were recorded during the weekend as well. Some low temperatures this week may fall below minus 10 Celsius, which would turn winter wheat dormant. Snowfall may occur this week and offer some cover against the lowest temperatures.

DRIER WEEK FOR AUSTRALIA

Australia wheat areas will be drier this week, and favorable for harvest. The Australia wheat crop is expected to be more than 80% larger than the drought-reduced crop of 2019-20.
