OMAHA (DTN) -- Rain focusing on the eastern Midwest and light precipitation for a dry area of Russia are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

HEAVY EASTERN MIDWEST RAIN

The DTN Ag Weather forecast calls for moderate to heavy rain in the southern and eastern Midwest through the next five days. Some flooding is likely; however, the rain will benefit filling corn and pod-setting soybeans. The northwestern Midwest had variable rain Wednesday with minimal easing of drought in western Iowa. This portion of the region only has light precipitation in store.

VARIABLE SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN

Southern Plains areas have moderate to heavy rain over the eastern half of the region through the next week. Some flooding is possible; however, moisture will be favorable for row crops. Southwestern areas will be dry with very warm to hot conditions. Soil moisture is needed ahead of winter wheat planting.

SCATTERED NORTHERN PLAINS SHOWERS

Northern Plains crop areas will have scattered showers through the weekend. A lack of heavy precipitation will favor maturing spring wheat. Crop conditions are generally favorable.

VARIABLE DELTA MOISTURE

Delta and Southeast crop areas will see shower and thunderstorm activity on at least a scattered basis through the weekend. Precipitation will be favorable for crops. Developing tropical storm Isaias in the Caribbean Sea may bring some local flooding to the Southeast.

WARMER FOR PRAIRIES

Canadian Prairies crop areas have a warmer trend during the end of the week through the weekend. Heat stress will be limited due to occurrences of showers to accompany the warming pattern. Overall crop conditions are still favorable.

LIGHT RUSSIA SHOWERS

In the Black Sea region through central Asia, dryness continues to stress crops in the Volga region of Russia. Showers will spread across eastern areas Friday through Sunday. Any showers would be welcome for corn and sunflowers, but this may be the only rainfall for another week. Prospects are much better across the western third of the region.

SCATTERED EUROPE RAIN

Europe crop areas will have scattered rain over the next week. Crop conditions are generally favorable except in southern France and Spain, where drier conditions are concerning.

CONTINUED BRAZIL DRY PATTERN

Across Brazil, dry conditions continue to favor harvest activities for corn and cotton in the central and north, while conditions remain favorable for developing wheat in the south.

LIMITED ARGENTINA RAIN

In central Argentina, the weekend brings warmer temperatures but only limited rainfall. Wheat acreage has been reduced due to dryness.

DRY LATE WEEK IN AUSTRALIA

Forecast maps offer little to no rainfall for eastern Australia wheat areas through the end of the week. Rain chances in the seven-day period bear close watching.
