Commodities Market Impact Weather
Cristobal-Related Midwest Rain Forecast
OMAHA (DTN) -- Prospects for heavy Midwest rain influenced by Tropical Storm Cristobal and chances for hot and dry conditions in the Black Sea region are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.
RAINY MIDWEST FORECAST
The DTN ag weather forecast calls for moderate to heavy rain in the Midwest over the next week. Rain chances are enhanced by indications of the effect of Tropical Storm Cristobal, indicated to track through the central U.S. Some rain may be excessive and lead to flooding and washing out of soils.
MORE DRYNESS IN SOUTHWEST PLAINS
In the Southern Plains, western sectors will continue mainly dry through the weekend. Dryness along with extreme heat will stress wheat and non-irrigated cotton. Eastern areas have better chances for showers.
HEAT AND STORMS FOR NORTHERN PLAINS
In the Northern Plains, heat through the weekend could lead to stress for emerging and developing crops, but this may come with additional showers as well, which would reduce the stress where the showers do occur.
TROPICAL RAIN WATCH IN DELTA

The Delta will see periods of showers through the weekend, alleviating some recent dryness in spots. If Tropical Storm Cristobal tracks through the region early next week, it will likely bring heavy rainfall and risks for flooding.
SHOWERS FOR SOUTHEAST
In the southeastern U.S., scattered showers moving across the region through this weekend will help to alleviate recent dryness in some parts of the region. Cristobal is expected to stay off to the west and as it passes through the middle of the country on Sunday-Tuesday could have a limiting effect on showers across the area. Near to above normal temperatures should help foster rapid crop and pasture growth.
HEAVY RAIN FORECAST IN PRAIRIES
In the Canadian Prairies, a large storm system is in store for late week with widespread moderate to heavy rainfall. The rain will be generally favorable for crops. Seeding progress is near average across the region.
HOTTER AND DRIER IN BLACK SEA REGION
Across the Black Sea region, hotter and drier conditions are indicated in the 10-day forecast. This pattern threatens to cause stress to winter wheat.
WESTERN EUROPE SHOWERS
In Western Europe, showers have finally returned to drought-hit areas from the UK and northern France to Germany and should continue through at least the weekend and possibly through all of next week.
CENTRAL BRAZIL DRYNESS
Across Brazil, southern crop areas continue to be in line for moderate to heavy rain during the coming week. The rain is coming too late for meaningful crop benefit. Farther north, mainly dry conditions in Mato Grosso will be favorable for the safrinha corn harvest.
NORTHERN ARGENTINA SHOWERS
In Argentina, rain is indicated for northern areas during the last half of the week. Some harvest delay may occur.
DRY AUSTRALIA TREND
Australia wheat areas will be mainly dry through the balance of the week. Recent rains have improved soil moisture for crop development.
