Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- Wet conditions in store through the next 10 days across the central United States, and mainly dry conditions in southern Brazil and Argentina, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

HEAVY MIDWEST PRECIPITATION1

The DTN ag weather forecast continues to feature an active storm pattern with rain and snow in the Midwest through the next 10 days. Precipitation will be heaviest in the southern half of the region. Fieldwork disruption and flooding are likely. Northern areas will see less precipitation after locally heavy amounts Thursday. This ongoing wet pattern will be unfavorable for field drying and warming of soils ahead of spring fieldwork.

VARIABLE SOUTHERN PLAINS MOISTURE

In the Southern Plains, periods of rainfall will boost soil moisture for central and eastern sectors over the next week. Rainfall will be heaviest in southeastern areas, where flooding is likely. Drier sections in the southwest could be under stress due to dry and windy conditions.

SNOW AND COLD FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

Northern Plains areas have very cold conditions through the end of the week, which will be stressful to livestock. Temperatures will remain below normal during the next week. There is also the chance for another large storm to move through the region during the middle of next week.

DELTA FLOOD THREAT

The Delta has continued near-daily rounds of rain through the next 10 days. Precipitation totals will be moderate to heavy. This wet pattern will cause significant disruption in fieldwork. Flooding is a major threat due to already saturated soils ahead of the rain.

SOUTHERN BRAZIL DRYNESS STRESS

Southern Brazil crop areas have very little rain indicated through the next week. Dryness stress has already led to reduced soybean crop prospects in Rio Grande do Sul. Central and northern Brazil crop areas have heavier rain in the forecast. Soybean and second-crop corn production will be large in these areas due to favorable moisture this season.

LIGHT ARGENTINA RAIN

Argentina's central crop areas will have mainly light rain through the weekend. The lighter rain will combine with very warm weather to stress crops.

COLDER PATTERN FOR BLACK SEA REGION

In the Black Sea region, recent showers have improved soil moisture conditions for winter grains. A colder trend is forecast through the next seven days and will bear watching for possible stress to winter wheat.
