Rain and Snow for Midwest

OMAHA (DTN) -- Rain and snow in the Midwest forecast, and rain indicated to disrupt soybean harvest in central Brazil, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

WET MIDWEST FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for rain and snow to maintain very wet conditions in the southern and eastern Midwest during this week. We may also see some delay to travel and transport in areas of heaviest snow. Next week the rain or snow may become more widespread and heavier in the region. The general pattern is likely to increase concern, again, about spring planting delays.

SOUTHERN PLAINS SNOW

In the Southern Plains, temperatures will turn lower this week, but will not be low enough to cause problems for winter wheat or to be very stressful to livestock. Rain and snow in southern areas maintains favorable soil moisture for winter wheat. Snow may mean some concern for livestock. Also, increasing precipitation and potential cold weather during the six-to-10-day outlook could be some risk to livestock while continuing to improve moisture in wheat areas.

COLD NORTHERN PLAINS FORECAST

Northern Plains areas have a much colder pattern forecast in the six-to-10-day time frame. Daily minimum values below zero Fahrenheit are likely, especially near the Canadian border. A snowstorm is also indicated during the Feb. 12-Feb. 13 time frame.

WIDESPREAD BRAZIL SHOWERS

Across Brazil, a dry pattern in southern crop areas will ease over the balance of the week, with periods of moderate-to-heavy rain developing. This would be useful crop moisture. Central crop areas have continued rain in store, indicating disruption of soybean harvest and delays in planting cotton and safrinha corn. South-central Brazil is also on track for receiving moderate-to-heavy rain.

ARGENTINA RAIN

In central Argentina, locally heavy rain occurred in Cordoba province during the night. This system weakens somewhat as it moves over Santa Fe and northern Buenos Aires yesterday and today. This rain event is mostly beneficial. Showers in southern areas will continue the next day or two. Cooler weather in this area works its way slowly eastward.

VARIABLE BLACK SEA REGION TEMPERATURES

Russia and Ukraine have a variable temperature pattern in store during the next week. A short-lived but colder pattern is in store through the weekend, followed by a notably warmer trend. Snow is expected for only eastern Ukraine through the lower Volga Valley. Many winter wheat areas will have no snow cover against the cold.

CONTINUED AUSTRALIA DROUGHT

Eastern Australia crop areas have very little rain forecast through the next week. Catastrophic drought remains in place. Wheat crop estimates are the lowest in more than 10 years.
