Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- An intense central U.S. cold wave, and beneficial rain indicated across Brazil, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

VERY COLD IN MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for extreme cold in the Midwest this week, along with periods of snow. This wintry combination will delay and disrupt harvest and transportation. The late-week trend is for a drier and warmer pattern, with better harvest conditions.

EARLY-WEEK NORTHERN PLAINS COLD

In the Northern Plains, extreme cold and significant snow in western areas are stressful for livestock and will impede late harvest. Eastern areas are drier, but have delays due to very cold conditions. The pattern turns milder and drier late this week to ease stress.

BRIEF SOUTHERN PLAINS COLD

In the Southern Plains, beneficial rain occurred last week, favoring developing wheat in Oklahoma and north Texas. Conditions are very cold early this week, but are likely not cold enough to damage developing wheat.

FAVORABLE BRAZIL RAIN

Across Brazil, increasing showers are favorable for soil moisture in Parana, Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso. Rio Grande do Sul in the far south has adequate to surplus soil moisture. Additional rain in these areas is forecast this week, including expanding into northeast areas.

SCATTERED ARGENTINA SHOWERS

In Argentina, scattered rainfall is indicated for western crop areas this week. This prospect will be watched closely. Rain is especially needed in Cordoba.

CONTINUED AUSTRALIA DROUGHT

East-central and northeast Australia continue under drought conditions. No significant rainfall chances during the next 10 days. Wheat prospects continue to be lowered due to dryness. Wildfire damage has also been extensive, exacerbated by drought.

FAVORABLE SOUTH AFRICA PATTERN

South Africa has increasing showers and a variable temperature pattern offering improved conditions for planting and early development of corn and sugarcane.
