Ames, Iowa,-based Renewable Energy Group Inc. is expanding availability of REG Ultra Clean at 12 fuel stations in northern California, according to a news release from the company.

REG Ultra Clean is a premium renewable fuel that is a blend of biodiesel and renewable diesel. The company said the fuel is one of the "lowest carbon intensity liquid transportation fuels on the market."

Renewable diesel differs from biodiesel in the way it is produced. Both fuels use the same feedstocks including soybean oil, and waste oils and greases.

Renewable diesel, however, is processed in a way that is similar to petroleum diesel. This means renewable diesel is chemically identical to petroleum diesel.

Renewable Energy Group announced on Wednesday the company entered into an agreement with Hunt and Sons, Inc. to supply the REG Ultra Clean to stations in San Jose, Stockton, Oakdale, Modesto, Ceres, Livermore, Antioch and Benicia in California. The fuel already is available at stations in Sacramento and Rancho Cordova.

To this point in the life of the state's low-carbon fuel standard, most of the qualified renewable fuel sold in the state has been ethanol.

"This agreement positions REG and Hunt and Sons to deliver a cleaner-burning, sustainable fuel that immediately reduces emissions within their existing fueling systems and infrastructure," said Gary Haer, REG vice president of sales and marketing. "We are proud to work with Hunt and Sons to provide solutions that answer the call of California's forward-thinking carbon reduction strategies."

Hunt and Sons is a California-based petroleum products distributor headquartered in Sacramento.

"Hunt and Sons is excited to expand our relationship with REG by providing our customers throughout northern California with a cleaner burning renewable fuel," said Josh Hunt, Hunt and Sons chief executive officer. "We always strive to provide the best customer service and most innovative products to our customers and REG Ultra Clean will help us fulfill those goals while benefitting the environment."

According to a news release, REG Ultra Clean reduces emissions "significantly" compared to petroleum diesel.

The companies said the fuel consumed in the agreement will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 250,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide, or equal to more than 6 million miles driven by an average passenger vehicle.

"Consumers are demanding cleaner, innovative solutions and we are committed to producing clean fuels sustainably," Haer said. "REG Ultra Clean provides a simple, cost effective immediate carbon reduction solution for diesel consumers today."
